I ended up being on the movie for over two months during the shoot, and had just a ball, and a big studio experience that got me on my way.ĪVC: How did you get into the circus contortionist stuff?ĭJ: Well, the contorting thing, I never got into it. So why don’t you go visit our casting office in the next building over?” I’m like, “Wh-wha-what part? I thought I was here for a sight gag.” Turns out there was a scripted part for a character named “Thin Clown,” who was partnered up with a “fat clown” in the Red Triangle Circus Gang as these sidekicks. They come back in the room, and Tim says, “Great, you got the part then. So Tim goes, “That’s great, stay here, we’re going to go talk about you in the other room, and then we’ll get back in a second.” So of course they leave the room, and I’m sitting there quietly, my heart pounding, like, “What are they talking about?” So I wet myself, and he says, “Yeah, this is our director, Tim, and why don’t you do for him what you just did for me?” So “wakka wakka yada, yada yada yada.” I did my whole legs behind arms thing. They invite me to come in meet them, meet the stunt coordinator, and I bend up for him, put my legs behind the head, and do a little thing with my arms, and “wakka wakka yada, yada yada yada.” And he’s like, “Wow, that’s great, Doug, why don’t you stay right here, and I want you to meet somebody.” So he goes out of the room and comes in back with Tim Burton. Bob was just referring me as a sight gag on a day or two of filming, and then they should be done.

After attending Bishop Chatard High School, he headed off to Ball State University, where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, with a minor in Theatre. The youngest of four brothers, Doug Jones was born on in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in the city's Northeastside.
